What is EMA?
It is an allowance awarded to parents/guardians from very low income families to encourage children to remain in full-time education.
Who will be entitled to EMA?
A parent may claim EMA in respect of a pupil who:-
- has attained the age of 19 years;
- is following a full time course at a grant-aided school or institution of further education;
- has not been awarded under the provisions of Article 50 or 51 of the Order any other award which includes provision for his maintenance; and
- is ordinarily resident in its area
- the parent/guardians gross annual income is £9,307 or less (amount of annual income changes each year)
Will EMA affect my other Benefits?
The EMA is paid in addition to other benefits provided by the Government. You will not lose out on other money if you are awarded EMA.
What is the procedure to apply for EMA?
An application form for EMA has to be completed by the parent/guardian and forwarded to the Board in which you reside. Guidance can be obtained from your Local Education and Library Board.
